About Phoenix

Phoenix is a home for kids in need, and we strive to support them from childhood to adulthood until they are ready to take on
the world through higher education or directly to paid work.

This is the Berentsen Foundation’s first initiative. Our mission is to give 50 children and youth a safe and nurturing environment.

We are committed to support children to adulthood

The long-term goal is a self-financed ecosystem

The foundation will function as a competence center providing a blueprint for NexGen humanitarian work towards children in need

The humanitarian work by the Foundation shall be transparent, ethic, and in accordance with applicable laws and regulations

Selection Criteria for the Children Who Live at Phoenix

Admission age is from 4 years to 8 years. The children can stay at the orphanage until they turn 18 years. There will be both boys and girls living at the orphanage. Initially, there will be capacity to have 15-25 children living in the orphanage. During 2025, we will have the capacity to have 50 children living in the orphanage.

Operation of Phoenix

We have a suitable site in Arsenal, an area in the north of Mauritius. The plot is relatively flat and well suited for the purpose and is situated secluded in a rural area well protected from traffic, but at the same time close to public transport, schools and the city center.

Phoenix will be built in Arsenal in Mauritius. Construction of the orphanage will start in Q3 2023. Stipulated opening of the home is Q2 2024. The construction is done by local contractors.

Operation of Phoenix

The Berentsen Foundation is responsible for financing the orphanage. To ensure the best possible operation of the orphanage, the operation has been outsourced to Safire. Safire is an organization with many years of experience. They have assisted street children in large parts of Mauritius since 2006 and also runs several orphanages and shelters today. Safire consists of a team of 17 full-time employees who work dedicatedly to the cause of street children. Several of these full-time employees will contribute to running Phoenix.

After long research, we find this organization as the best operator for running Phoenix. The Berentsen Foundation has entered into a Management agreement with Safire who secure a professional operation of Phoenix. The Berentsen Foundation is nevertheless involved in hiring and operations in such a way that a framework for operations has been developed and Safire must report monthly in relation to these guidelines.
